BRO MYRDDIN FIRST SCHOOL IN UK WITH FINGER VEIN READERS
With the recession affecting operating budgets across the UK and Ireland, schools, colleges, universities, and indeed businesses, are trying to find ways in which they can streamline their operations and make huge savings. Cashless catering has been highlighted as a simple yet effective method of reducing administration burdens and actually improving catering facility usage and therefore generates increased profits.
Retail Systems Technology (RST) are a pioneering company in the EPOS and Cashless Catering fields, with over 30 years experience in providing highly reliable and functional solutions to both hospitality and retail.
Following RST’s success in being chosen as preferred supplier of EPOS & Cashless Solutions to the UK Universities by The University Caterers Organisation (TUCO), RST are delighted to announce that we have now integrated Biometric Finger Vein Recognition with our Cashless Solution.
Bro Myrddin Welsh Comprehensive School in Carmarthenshire, Wales has become the first school in the UK and Ireland to adopt this cutting edge technology, which will manage approximately 1000 pupils and staff on site. The implementation of Finger Vein Recognition within a cashless catering application brings an array of benefits to the school.

The system speed is greatly increased, with users identified in less than one second, which is a stark contrast to other technologies such as swipe/smart cards and even biometric fingerprint recognition.
Another major benefit with Finger Vein Recognition is that it removes any privacy concerns that are commonly associated with Fingerprints, because unlike Fingerprint Recognition, the data required is actually gathered from within a pupil or employee’s finger using infrared light.
“With the use of the vein readers we have eliminated any unfounded issues of data protection which parents have previously worried about when using fingerprints” Yvonne Cole, Carmarthenshire County Council
With Finger Vein recognition integrated into the revaluation units and the canteen Point of Sale Systems, Bro Myrddin have found that meal time efficiency has greatly improved, as has canteen usage. Cashless catering also has many inherent benefits, such as ensuring the anonymity of pupils who receive free meals and thereby eliminating the “free meals” stigma.
RST have also teamed up with ParentPay, the UK leader in online top-ups for cashless, to provide a service where parents can top up their child’s account and even see what they have been eating via special reports provided by the system.

FINGER VEIN RECOGNITION
Biometric vein identification is one of the most advanced biometric identification technologies available in today's market. The technology works by identifying subcutaneous (under the skin) vein patterns in an individual's finger. When the user's finger is placed on the scanner, an infrared light maps the location of the veins. The red blood cells, present within the vein, absorb these light rays and show up on the map as black lines, whereas the remaining hand structure shows up white. After the vein template is extracted, it is matched to the corresponding previously stored pattern.
Fast & Accurate
Rates of acceptance for false users or rejecting registered users are among the lowest for biometric technologies, making it highly reliable for security applications. Unique vein patterns, plus our cutting edge technology mean extremely high accuracy rates, and with only a small amount of data required per scan, a user's ID can be verified in less than one second.
