Bro Myrddin Welsh Comprehensive School in Carmarthenshire, Wales has become the first school in the UK and Ireland to adopt this cutting edge technology, which will manage approximately 1000 pupils and staff on site. The implementation of Finger Vein Recognition within a cashless catering application brings an array of benefits to the school.

The system speed is greatly increased, with users identified in less than one second, which is a stark contrast to other technologies such as swipe/smart cards and even biometric fingerprint recognition.

Another major benefit with Finger Vein Recognition is that it removes any privacy concerns that are commonly associated with Fingerprints, because unlike Fingerprint Recognition, the data required is actually gathered from within a pupil or employee’s finger using infrared light.

With Finger Vein recognition integrated into the revaluation units and the canteen Point of Sale Systems, Bro Myrddin have found that meal time efficiency has greatly improved, as has canteen usage. FINGER VEIN RECOGNITION

Biometric vein identification is one of the most advanced biometric identification technologies available in today's market. The technology works by identifying subcutaneous (under the skin) vein patterns in an individual's finger. When the user's finger is placed on the scanner, an infrared light maps the location of the veins. The red blood cells, present within the vein, absorb these light rays and show up on the map as black lines, whereas the remaining hand structure shows up white. After the vein template is extracted, it is matched to the corresponding previously stored pattern.

Overview

JTF Wholesale are the UK’s largest non-food wholesale retailer in the UK with a total of 9 branches operating throughout England. At this point in time they have a customer file in excess of 400,000 and an equally large product file over 67,000.

The system installed by RST allows JTF to manage pricing and operations throughout their 9 branches, centrally from the head office. This significantly reduces the administrative burden on the company and indeed the branches themselves.

The Problem

The EPOS system used in JTF had been in place for a number of years, wasn’t very easy to use and was proving to be very unreliable.. One of the main issues was that there was no integration into their existing legacy back office system, meaning that the accuracy of pricing and stock levels throughout each store would all depend on the actions of certain staff members.

JTF had also earmarked the site for a new Time & Attendance system for management and employees, expecting to spend a figure in the region of £70,000. The company also wanted to implement some form of personal shopping for their VIP customers whereby they could simply walk around the store with a member of staff who could then assemble their order. This process was carried out manually and relied heavily upon the accuracy of the staff member in taking note of the order – the problem was that more often than not there were some inaccuracies and customers were sent the wrong order. This led to many customer service issues which inhibited business growth.

The Solution

RST met with representatives of JTF to discuss the design and implementation of a comprehensive EPOS system that would be both easy to use and feature rich, enabling them to enhance their customer service.

The EPOS system installed by RST was both easy to use and reliable. “We found that our staff could easily get to grips with the new software, everything was there and marked clearly for them on the touch screen so I believe we saved a lot of time in training thanks to the POS software”, said Andy Brunt, JTF IT Services Manager. The hardware provided by RST is also dust and waterproof, which is essential from a reliability point of view in this type of business.

From the offset JTF saved on the £70,000 earmarked for their Time & Attendance system as RST offered them the iTouch POS Time & Attendance module, which would seamlessly link to their payroll system. This module would allow the 740 company employees to sign in and out using the biometric fingerprint readers on the point of sale. Not only did this save the company a huge amount of money but the module itself, by using biometric fingerprint readers, meant that the “buddying” process was instantly eliminated as staff would no longer be able to sign other staff in and out – saving the company even more money.

The Outcome

RST provided JTF with a comprehensive EPOS system that now centralised their operations and made the day to day running of the company as a whole, much more efficient. In integrating the EPOS system with Time & Attendance, Back Office, and the VIP shopper programme, the company has saved a vast amount of money and has significantly reduced its administrative burden. “At JTF we are all extremely thankful for the hard work put in by the team at RST in providing us with an EPOS system that does a lot more than simply tick the boxes. We have found that working in collaboration with RST has been very beneficial to our business technology needs.
